Preparing Your Car For The Summer Heat

Driving in a hot weather condition can be a little rough. The high temperatures during summer days speed up a vehicle's wear and tear. Motor oils and lubricants also break down more rapidly. So before hitting the road this summer, don't forget to make the necessary precautions and preparations, including getting your car in good working condition. Here are some things that you can do to avoid problems along the way:

  1. It is important that you have some necessary tools and items in your car before going to a trip. Bring jumper cables, tools for changing tires, spare tire and a few gallons of water. Don't forget to bring a first aid kit. You will need those supplies during an emergency situation.
  2. Check your oil. Make sure there's enough in the engine. A low oil level may cause overheating. As part of routine maintenance, it is recommended to change motor oil every 3,000-5,000 miles.
  3. Inspect the filters and consider changing them. Air and oil filters become too dirty during dusty summer. Air filter affects the coolant of the car, whereas oil filter affects the performance of the engine.
  4. Check your battery. High heat can put more strain on the battery. Test it to make sure it is in tip-top shape. If it is weak, consider replacing it. Also check the fluid level and the connection cables. Clean all the corrosions.
  5. Make sure that the tires are properly inflated. An underinflated tire not only reduces the life of your tire, but also decreases your car’s fuel mileage. Inspect if there are visible damages to your tire..
  6. Check your air conditioning system. Make sure that it's working right. During the hot summer months, air conditioning usually fails due to extreme heat.
  7. Of course, regular maintenance can avoid mechanical problems that you might encounter along the way. See a professional mechanic to ensure that every part is working well.
